August 2011

A busy summer but some work getting done.  I delivered a Mahogany/Master Grade Lutz cutaway OM to Gary Miner.  It has a Brazilian fretboard and bridge and I was pretty blown away by the sound.  Lots of clarity and tonal separation.

I’ll be getting a Rosewood/Sitka OM back from finish in a week and it’s headed to The Podium.  I have a Mahogany/Lutz OM with double sides going to finish next week.  It should be at The Podium by November.

Almost done in the current batch is an Archtop I am working with David Roos on.  It will have a built-in neck pickup and is designed to be played mainly plugged in.

Also a client Dred almost complete.

This fall’s batch will include two client size 2’s.  That’s my favorite guitar so I’m looking forward to it.  They will be numbers 45 and 46 so I should hit 50 next year.  I’ve got something special planned for that one.

The fall batch turned into three size 2’s.  There have been a lot of interruptions for trips to take care of grandkids, funerals in remote places like the Nebraska Sandhills and some medical stuff.  Back on track now.

Some of the causes of the interruptions.

I’ve got a new Lutz/Rosewood OM at The Podium.  It has a Brazilian bridge and sounds great.  Lutz and Brazilian are a great combination.

I should be getting a Mahogany/Lutz OM back from finish this week and it is headed to The Podium as well.  I also completed a Mahogany/Sitka dred for a client and am happy with it.  I also have an archtop in finish getting a dark burst.

I had a great visit recently.  Simon and Ari Sheehan from Crosshaven Ireland.  Simon is a Twin Cities musician and Ari still lives in Ireland and is a luthier.  He brought a beautiful archtop guitar he built.  We had a great time together.

I have another guitar at the podium, a Mahogany/Lutz OM with double sides and a BZ bridge.  The double sides definitely had a positive effect.  I’m finding that the combination of a Lutz top and BZ bridge is also a very good thing.

I am waiting for three size 2 commissions as well as an archtop to come back from finish.  Meanwhile I have started #50!  It will be a Brazilian/Lutz size 2.  The BZ is from 60’s Martin stock.  Also another archtop.  Stay tuned!
